What is Toronto Jam 4 Good (TJ4G)?

TJ4G is part of the Global Jams, an annual service design jam convening of people from all walks of life, all over the world.

Participants in cities across the globe coalesce around pressing social issues with the goal of designing a prototype of their solution(s) within 48 hours.

We invite thinkers, dreamers, and doers from every sector across Toronto to join us to jam together for two days straight prototyping solutions for problems that are persistent in the following topics:

Sustainability

Media Literacy

Financial Wellbeing

Immigration

General Health

What is a "Jam"?

One special weekend, people interested in service and customer experience will meet at locations all over the globe. They will be designers, developers, strategists, students, academics, business people, and everyone else.

In a spirit of experimentation, innovation, co-operation and friendly competition, teams will have less than 48 hours to develop and prototype completely new services, products or initiatives inspired by a shared theme.  At the end of the Jam, their collection of brand new insights and prototypes will be published to the world.

Our Story

Many years ago (2019, to be exact) 8 strangers with a similar interests in seeing design jams being used for good, came together and organised the first Toronto Jam for Good as a local host participating in the Global Jam. They managed to bring together 35 participants (with a 25 person waitlist), 22 mentors, 6 judges, nine speakers, and several sponsors.

Over the course of a weekend, many ideas were born, and many friendships were formed.

In 2020, an even bigger group (including many past members) tried to organise the event once again, only to have the host cancel last minute due to concerns of a Corona virus outbreak. Of course, these were early days of the pandemic that we all now know as COVID19.

Despite the setback, the organisers managed to organise a very successful event online (before online events were a thing!)

After a break of 2 years, several organisers have stepped forward to bring the Toronto Jam for Good back to life once again, and that’s how last year’s jam was brought to life.

We decided not to step back from the tradition of jamming together once a year, so this year TJ4G (=Toronto Jam for Good) is back again!

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, a judge, a speaker or a sponsor, we want to hear from you.

Code of Conduct

Our Jam for Good provides a safe and comfortable environment experience for everyone, regardless of but not limited to their gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, political views and previous hackathon attendance or lack of.

Different people process information and handle relationships differently. We ask participants to listen openly to each other, being aware of those around them and including everyone in the conversations.

We have zero-tolerance for harassment, and sexual language and imagery are not appropriate in any form. Jam participants violating this will be expelled immediately from the jam without a refund.

This applies to all the participants in the Jam, regardless of their involvement. All the participants will have access to contact details of two members of the organization, so they can talk to someone anytime if they need to.

We hope this will help us to create an even better Jam, with successful projects and what’s even more important for us, participants that can get the most of this experience while respecting each other.
